As your practice develops, you will most likely need something a little different from your yoga mat. As a beginner, your primary focus would have been grip, as you did not yet have the strength in your core to hold yourself in certain postures. Grip, sadly, does not always go hand-in-hand with durability as grip mats are generally quite soft. Daily practice requires a mat that endures, and perhaps a mat (controversially!) that does not give you quite as much grip, but just enough to stop you from slipping. Encouraging you to pull the weight out of your hands in postures such as downward dog and hold yourself in place using your bandhas.
